The idea
Marine fossils on mountains and layered rock implied millions of years; Lyell's Principles of Geology made deep time standard. Darwin, with Beagle evidence, published On the Origin of Species in eighteen fifty-nine: species change by small variations, and those that help survive are naturally selected.
