The idea
In sixteen eighty-five Louis revoked the Edict of Nantes, which had let Huguenots worship since fifteen ninety-eight, by the Edict of Fontainebleau. Protestants had to convert or leave. The anchor puts the exodus above two hundred thousand.
In practice
A commercially productive minority carried its skills to Louis's enemies.
Where people slip
The anchor calls it self-defeating; the exam asks fact and effect.
