The idea

In sixteen hundred England had a quarter of France's people, the anchor's figure, a weak monarchy and powerful landowners. Its church was nominal: only Anglicans held office, but a high-church faction loved Catholic ritual while Puritans, Calvinist in belief, wanted austerity.

In practice

Scotland Presbyterian, Ireland Catholic and colonized, English Catholics underground.

Where people slip

The anchor's irony: this backwater became the first great constitutional monarchy.
