The idea
The exam runs from the Peace of Westphalia to the present: about one hundred twenty questions in ninety minutes. Twelve periods carry fixed weights, and absolutism and constitutionalism, sixteen forty-eight to seventeen fifteen, carry seven to nine percent of them.
In practice
Twelve bands, from Louis XIV to the European Union.
Where people slip
The exam tests recall, cause, sequence, maps and passages, not essays.
