Universalism: Why Rome Found Christianity Alien
Captions available
The idea
Christianity inherited spiritual equality from Judaism and opened it to all: no social distinctions, love of neighbor regardless of rank, which the anchor calls alien to Roman legal hierarchy. Monotheism refused emperor-worship, and evangelism drew suspicion. Nero blamed Christians for the fire of sixty-four.
In practice
Martyrdom as a lasting trope.
Where people slip
The anchor's chapter ten dates the fire sixty-eight. It was sixty-four.
