Marius's Army and Sulla's Dictatorship
Captions available
The idea
Marius abolished the property requirement; soldiers swore to the general and expected land from him. Sulla, stripped of the command against Mithridates, marched on Rome, won the civil war of eighty-three, and ruled as dictator from eighty-one with proscriptions.
In practice
The witness dates Italian citizenship to ninety; the anchor says eighty-four.
Where people slip
The anchor once calls Sulla's enemy the Parthians. Mithridates.
