Captions available
The idea
Jericho was settled by about eight thousand B.C.E. and Çatal Höyük in Anatolia by about seventy-five hundred. Çatal Höyük's graves already show rich and poor, and its obsidian tools traveled hundreds of miles in trade.
In practice
Specialized manufacture and long-distance trade from the dawn of settlement.
Where people slip
These towns predate the great Mesopotamian cities by more than four thousand years. Change was slow.
