Herodotus and Thucydides Compared as Historians

The idea

The exam pairs the two historians and asks which did what. The method is four features: subject, explanation, method, and stance. Herodotus: the Persian War; explained by how cultures respond to pressure; travel and inquiry; curious about foreigners yet calling them barbarians. Thucydides: the Peloponnesian War; explained by a thesis about power; evidence marshaled to defend it; a participant writing analysis.

In practice

Apply to three descriptions. A history that pauses to describe Egyptian customs and Persian court practice before the battles: Herodotus, the culture explanation. A history that opens by declaring what the war's true cause was and then proves it: Thucydides, the thesis. A history whose author traveled the eastern Mediterranean collecting stories he could not verify: Herodotus, inquiry by travel. And the exam's likely stem, which historian did the anchor call the real father of history: Thucydides, for the thesis defended with evidence. Both share the Greek invention itself, narrative built from sources rather than myth.

Where people slip

Herodotus is not the credulous one and Thucydides the scientific one. Herodotus asked whether cultures could be judged, which Thucydides did not, and the anchor's death dates for both differ from common tables, so say about. The exam wants the method contrast, not a ranking.
