Macedon: Warriors, Villages, and a Fractious Crown
Captions available
The idea
Macedon lay north of Greece: villages of warriors and traders, Greek by language, bumpkins to the south. A monarchy plagued by rival relatives and nobles, raided by Thracians, it fell into civil war from three ninety-nine for forty years.
In practice
An army of free citizens paid in loot.
Where people slip
Macedon was Greek enough to compete at Olympia. Do not call it foreign.
