The Developmental Assignment Matrix

The idea

The book's developmental assignment matrix sorts work by two things, the person's current competence for the task and the task's stakes, to decide who should do what.

In practice

Step one: recognise the comfort zone, high competence and low stakes, good for confidence and stability but a route to stagnation if it is all a person gets. Step two: use the stretch band, moderate competence and moderate stakes, the main place where competence grows. Step three: reserve the growth edge, low competence and high stakes, for resilient people with strong adjacent skills and heavy support. Step four: use the delegation zone, high competence and high stakes, as the leader's highest expression of trust.

Where people slip

The book adds a fifth corner, busywork, with no developmental value at all, and says most of a person's time belongs in the stretch band.
