Do People Experience Choice?

The idea

The book closes its autonomy chapter with five diagnostic questions, meant to be answered about what a leader actually does, not what they intend.

In practice

Step one: when you assign work, do you explain the why and invite input on the how, or supply both? Step two: when someone works differently from you, do you judge the outcome or step into the process? Step three: do people make meaningful decisions without you, or does everything route through you? Step four: when did you last ask someone what they want to work on? Step five: do people still volunteer preferences, or have they stopped because preferences are not honoured?

Where people slip

The book calls the questions diagnostic, not evaluative: there are no correct answers, only truthful ones, and the questions that make a leader uncomfortable are the ones most worth sitting with.
