Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 24   TSC 589 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Antimicrobial-Coated Sutures

Captions available

The idea

Some sutures are coated with an antimicrobial agent intended to lower the risk of surgical site infection.

In practice

The WHO guideline suggests triclosan-coated sutures for any type of surgery; the suture chapter also describes antibacterial coatings.

Where people slip

The suture is still chosen by the surgeon for the tissue; the coating is an addition, not a substitute.
