The Caste System
Captions available
The idea
A caste system is a closed stratification system in which position is ascribed at birth, fixed for life, and typically reinforced by rules on marriage and occupation.
In practice
Position determines occupation and marriage partner, and no achievement alters it.
Where people slip
The system is defined by closure, and it need not be tied to any one religion or region.
