Recidivism
Captions available
The idea
Recidivism is the return to offending after a sanction, and it is the standard measure of whether a correctional response worked.
In practice
A system releasing people without housing, work, or ties sees many of them return.
Where people slip
Recidivism rates depend heavily on how re-offending is defined and how long people are followed.
