Stanley Milgram found that most participants would continue delivering what they believed were harmful shocks when an authority figure instructed them to proceed.
In practice
Participants protested, showed distress, and continued — obedience persisted even as they believed they were causing harm.
Where people slip
The finding concerns obedience to authority, which is a different mechanism from conformity to a peer group.
