The idea
Modernization is the process by which a society increases specialization and structural differentiation, moving from undeveloped toward a developed, tech-driven economy.
In practice
A society shifting from small-scale subsistence farming to specialized industrial and service roles illustrates the structural differentiation modernization names.
Where people slip
Modernization describes a structural process; it carries no built-in judgment about whether it improves the lives of people living through it.
