The idea
Human ecology is a functionalist field studying the relationship between people and their built and natural environments, treating land use as predictable.
In practice
A transportation system built around highways, compared with one built around dense rail, reflects two different human-ecology relationships to environment.
Where people slip
Human ecology studies patterns in how people relate to environment; it claims no land-use pattern is correct or natural.
