The idea
Figuration, named by Norbert Elias, is the practice of analyzing a person's behavior and the society shaping that behavior at the same time.
In practice
Studying a nurse's bedside manner alongside the staffing ratios and liability rules governing the ward is figuration.
Where people slip
The tempting shortcut is studying the person first and adding context later; figuration says context was never separable.
