Gender Identity: Cisgender and Transgender
Captions available
The idea
Gender identity is a person's own deeply held sense of their gender; a cisgender person's identity matches their sex assigned at birth, a transgender person's does not.
In practice
A transgender man was assigned female at birth and lives, and is properly addressed, as a man.
Where people slip
Cisgender and transgender describe identity alone and say nothing about a person's sexual orientation.
