The idea
Assimilation is the process by which a minority group takes on the dominant culture's characteristics, typically without a matching change in the dominant group.
In practice
Sociologists track it by socioeconomic status, residential pattern, language, and intermarriage across generations.
Where people slip
Assimilation can proceed by degrees; a group may retain some markers, such as a single yearly holiday, and lose most others.
