Captions available
The idea
By the sixteenth century Islam reached West and East Africa, southeastern Europe, India and Southeast Asia, with no single caliphate. Shared faith gave cohesion despite disagreement, and trade unified the wider Islamic world through markets under Muslim inspectors, with Jewish and Christian partners.
In practice
Mapmaking, navigation, firearms and artillery traveling the routes.
Where people slip
Those weapons armed the Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals.
