Social Sciences and History / Unit 3 SSH 0221 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Expansion, Citizenship, and the Punic Wars
Captions available
The idea
Rome led the Latin League, beat it in three thirty-eight BCE, and offered the defeated citizenship without the vote for loyalty and troops. Wars were annual and deliberately terrifying, as Polybius noted. From two sixty-four, the Punic Wars broke Carthage.
In practice
Greece taken in the same decades.
Where people slip
Every victory added soldiers. The citizenship precedent, more than any battle, built the empire.
