Social Sciences and History / Unit 2   SSH 0113 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Woman Suffrage to the Nineteenth Amendment

Captions available

The idea

Stanton, Anthony, Catt and Paul built the case for a constitutional amendment. Paul's Silent Sentinels picketed the White House for years; their hunger strike and force-feeding became a scandal.

In practice

The Nineteenth Amendment ratified in nineteen twenty.

Where people slip

Suffrage came to fruition partly through the war's circumstances and, unlike prohibition, it stayed. The women's movement then waned for a time.
