Drive-reduction theory holds that a physiological need creates a drive that motivates behavior to reduce it.

Fluid loss creates thirst, which motivates drinking, which ends the drive.

Watch for

Drive reduction cannot explain behavior that increases arousal, such as seeking novelty or risk.
