Psychology / Unit 6   Psych 0647 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Chunking

Captions available

The idea

Chunking is grouping individual items into larger meaningful units, increasing how much short-term memory can hold.

In practice

A ten-digit phone number is held as three groups, and the ten-item limit stops applying.

Where people slip

Chunking requires existing knowledge to build the chunks from. It is not available for unfamiliar material.
