Reinforcement is any consequence that increases the frequency of the behavior it follows.
In practice
A child who is praised for showing homework brings homework to be shown more often.
Where people slip
Reinforcement is defined by its effect, not by its pleasantness. If frequency did not rise, it was not reinforcement.
