The idea
Extinction is the weakening of a conditioned response when the conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus.
In practice
Salivation to the tone declines across trials in which the tone is never followed by food.
Where people slip
Extinction does not erase the original learning. It adds new learning that competes with it.
