The idea
An agonist is a substance that increases a neurotransmitter's activity, by mimicking it or by amplifying its effect.
In practice
A drug that blocks serotonin reuptake leaves more serotonin in the synapse and acts as a serotonin agonist.
Where people slip
An agonist does not always imitate the transmitter. Blocking its removal produces the same directional result.
