The idea
The just-world hypothesis is the belief that people generally get what they deserve, which leads to blaming victims of misfortune.
In practice
Observers of an unfair outcome revise their view of the victim downward rather than revise their view of the world.
Where people slip
The belief serves a protective function. Believing outcomes are earned makes one's own outcomes feel controllable.
