The idea
A sentencing hearing as a map of the free will debate: what each position, taken seriously, changes about punishment—and what none of them changes.
In practice
The shared premise. Everyone in the room accepts it: responsibility presupposes control—praise and blame make sense only for what was up to the agent. The dispute is over what satisfies it, and a sentencing hearing is where the dispute stops being academic.
