The idea
A hypothetical imperative commands on a condition—if you want X, do Y; the categorical imperative commands unconditionally, whatever you happen to want.
In practice
"Practice, if you want to make the team" releases whoever quits the tryouts. "Keep your promises" offers no exit clause.
