The idea
A premature beat comes earlier than expected, from somewhere other than the SA node.
In practice
Premature atrial contractions are common in older adults and are often linked to caffeine, tobacco, anxiety or electrolyte imbalances; premature ventricular contractions make a rhythm occasionally irregular.

Report premature beats, especially if the patient has symptoms.
