Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 21 MAS 518 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Documenting the Draw
The idea
Every blood draw is documented in the patient's record, as the practice's procedure requires.
In practice
Step one: record the date and time of collection, matching the labels. Step two: record the tests collected and the tubes used. Step three: record the site, such as the right arm, and the number of attempts. Step four: record any complication, such as a hematoma or a fainting reaction, and what was done about it. Step five: record your name, and where the specimens were sent.
Where people slip
A complication left out of the record cannot be followed up by anyone else. Tell the provider about it as well as writing it down, and record the provider's response, so the record tells the whole story of the draw.
