Lexical Definitions

The idea

A lexical definition reports how a term is actually used. Unlike stipulations, it can be true or false.

In practice

Any dictionary entry is a lexical claim about usage.

Where people slip

Dictionaries record usage; they don't legislate it. "The dictionary says" settles less than people think.
