A Conservative Return Scenario

Captions available

The idea

The book offers a conservative return-on-investment scenario, built from assumptions it labels illustrative, not measured, for a team to replace with its own data.

In practice

Step one: estimate the share of total team effort spent on rework; the book's illustrative figure is twenty percent. Step two: estimate how much of that rework comes from requirement issues such as misunderstood things and missing rules; the book assumes half. Step three: multiply them, so requirement-driven rework is about ten percent of total effort, the slice the method mainly targets. Step four: assume disciplined use of Gold things, Packs, cards and matrices removes thirty to fifty percent of that slice. Step five: multiply again, for roughly three to five percent of team capacity recovered. Step six: measure your own baseline during the pilot, and replace every assumption with your numbers.

Where people slip

The book is plain that these are not guarantees, and it declines to promise a precise improvement. The scenario's value is showing that requirement-driven rework is a measurable slice of effort, which the pilot's own numbers then confirm or correct.
