Programmes for English Learners

The idea

US schools use four main programme types for English learners. Immersion teaches all subjects in English, with more loss of the home language. Developmental bilingual programmes start in the home language and add English. English as a Second Language pulls students out for English classes, with no home-language support elsewhere. Two-way immersion teaches equally in two languages, to English learners and native English speakers together.

In practice

A classroom teaching science in Spanish one day and in English the next, to children from both language backgrounds.

Where people slip

Two-way immersion is more effective for learning English and supports heritage, self-esteem and home-language retention, though results by subject are mixed, access is unequal, and it needs fluent bilingual teachers and one partner language. The choice reflects a school's goal, assimilation or multiculturalism.
