Human Growth and Development / Unit 6   HGD 0796 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Withdrawal and Shyness

Captions available

The idea

Withdrawing from peers is not antisocial behaviour; shyness is wanting to join others while fearing their judgement, often seen as hovering and watching.

In practice

A shy child at the edge of the sandbox, watching the others with obvious interest.

Where people slip

The misconception is that a shy child is antisocial. Shyness rises in new or evaluative settings and usually subsides.
