Gender Schema Theory
Captions available
The idea
Gender schema theory holds that children actively sort others' behaviour, activities and attributes into gender categories, called schemas, which then shape what they notice.
In practice
A child forgetting a story's male nurse but remembering its female nurse.
Where people slip
Children remember schema-consistent information better, so schemas strengthen over time. Research gives this account more support than social learning alone.
