Habituation

Captions available

The idea

Habituation is a decreasing response to a stimulus that is repeated, shown when an infant's looking, sucking or heart rate settles.

In practice

A baby staring at a new picture, then looking away as it is shown again and again.

Where people slip

Fast habituation is a sign of efficient processing: the infant has taken in the stimulus and is ready for something new.
