Schemas, Assimilation and Accommodation
Captions available
The idea
Piaget held that children organise knowledge in schemas: assimilation fits new information into a schema, and accommodation changes the schema to fit.
In practice
A child calling a parrot a bird, then meeting a penguin that cannot fly.
Where people slip
Piaget saw children as driven toward equilibrium, a balance between what they know and what they meet.
