Synapses
Captions available
The idea
A synapse is the gap where one neuron passes a message to another through neurotransmitters; forming these connections is called synaptogenesis.
In practice
About fifteen thousand synapses per neuron by the age of two, far more than will last.
Where people slip
Toddlers may have twice as many synapses as adults. The surplus is trimmed over the years that follow.
