How Much Infants Sleep

Captions available

The idea

Newborns need about fourteen to seventeen hours of sleep a day, two-year-olds eleven to fourteen, and adults seven to nine.

In practice

About half of a baby's sleep in the first year spent in REM, against a fifth to a quarter in adults.

Where people slip

Sleep is a biopsychosocial process, shaped by biology, psychology and social setting at once.
