First Words in Order
The idea
Early language follows a reliable order, entry 0367. Crying is present from birth. Cooing, vowel sounds, arrives by about two months, entry 0362. Babbling, repeated consonant-vowel sounds, begins around four to seven months and narrows toward the languages heard, entry 0363. Pointing appears around nine to twelve months, and first words around twelve months, entry 0364. Telegraphic two-word speech follows at eighteen to twenty-four months, with a vocabulary spurt, entry 0366.
In practice
One child's first three years on a line: cries, coos, babbles, points, words, two-word phrases, and a rush of new vocabulary.
Where people slip
The order is similar across cultures, which suggests a biological base, while the ages vary, entry 0367 notes. Exam items give a behaviour and an age and ask whether it is on time: babbling at six months is typical, first words at a year, two-word phrases by two.
