Disenfranchised Grief and Pets

Captions available

The idea

Disenfranchised grief, Doka's term, is grief that others do not acknowledge, as can follow the death of a pet, an ex-spouse or a perinatal loss.

In practice

More than half of children in pet-owning countries losing a pet before age seven.

Where people slip

The misconception is that grieving a pet isn't real grief; people describe pet and human loss in the same language.
