Kübler-Ross's Five Themes
Captions available
The idea
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, interviewing dying hospital patients in nineteen sixty-nine, described five themes: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.
In practice
A patient seeking second opinions, raging at his doctors, promising to change, grieving lost milestones, and finally facing death calmly.
Where people slip
Kübler-Ross described reactions to one's own impending death; the model was later applied to bereavement, and she proposed no timetable.
