The idea

A do-not-resuscitate order means no CPR if the heart or breathing stops; without one, staff must attempt resuscitation.

In practice

Do-not-intubate orders ruling out a breathing tube, and do-not-hospitalize orders avoiding unwanted transfers from long-term care.

Where people slip

Patients cite avoiding prolonged suffering and not burdening others, and many see resuscitation as violent and unlikely to succeed.
