Human Growth and Development / Unit 17 HGD 2413 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Children's Understanding of Death
The idea
A mature concept of death has four parts. Universality: everyone dies. Irreversibility: the dead do not come back. Causality: death has many causes. Nonfunctionality: all body functions stop, the hardest part, because it requires knowing how the body works. Irreversibility is especially hard during Piaget's preoperational stage, from about two to seven.
In practice
A four-year-old asking when her dead grandfather will come home for dinner, not yet grasping irreversibility.
Where people slip
The misconception is that young children cannot understand death. The traditional timeline understates them: many grasp universality and irreversibility by five and causality by six, and family deaths and rituals speed understanding. Exam items describe a child's statement and ask which part of the concept is missing: expecting return points to irreversibility, "not me" to universality.
