Peck's Tasks and Gerotranscendence
The idea
Peck expanded integrity versus despair into three tasks. Differentiation is finding identity and meaning apart from work after retirement. Body transcendence is accepting physical decline and valuing what does not depend on the body. Ego transcendence is accepting approaching death through reflection on life's meaning, closest to Erikson's life review. Tornstam later proposed gerotranscendence: in their eighties and nineties people look beyond themselves, feel connected to earlier generations and accept change as natural.
In practice
A retired teacher who finds new purpose mentoring, differentiation, and later makes peace with failing eyesight, body transcendence.
Where people slip
Joan Erikson adopted the idea of gerotranscendence for a ninth stage, after eighty. Evidence for it comes from Iranian, Japanese, Ethiopian and British samples, shaped by spirituality and tolerance for ambiguity. Exam items describe the task and ask for its name.
