Diagnosing Alzheimer's
Captions available
The idea
Alzheimer's has traditionally been diagnosed clinically, as probable or possible, because plaques and tangles could be confirmed only at autopsy.
In practice
Up to thirty percent of clinically diagnosed people lacking plaques and tangles, and a similar share with the pathology never showing symptoms.
Where people slip
Biological diagnosis is emerging, through amyloid and tau in spinal fluid, amyloid PET scans and developing blood tests.
