Trauma and Resilience

The idea

About seventy percent of adults worldwide report at least one traumatic event. The diagnostic manual defines a traumatic event as exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury or sexual violence. Women more often experience domestic and sexual violence and childhood abuse; men more often assault, disasters and war. About five percent of US adults have post-traumatic stress disorder in a given year, and about six percent at some point in life.

In practice

Two survivors of the same car crash, one troubled by nightmares months later and one recovering within weeks, supported by family and faith.

Where people slip

Trauma can bring emotion-regulation difficulty, attention problems and guilt, and it raises the risk of addiction and of anxiety and mood disorders, with effects that can pass across generations. Resilience, adapting successfully to adversity, is supported by an adaptive mindset, prompt social support, and cultural, religious or ethnic identity.
